COVID-19 Response Diary

Update - May 18th

A few members of The Candyman team worked hard this weekend to get the store sanitized and put systems in place. 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜!

As we gratefully are able to allow customers in our store to get what they need to keep making music, it is not only our responsibility to keep everyone safe in the process - we are also adhering to the law when abiding by the Governor's emergency orders. (𝐵𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑛𝑜𝑛-𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑚𝑎𝑦 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑐𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑙 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑟 𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑠.) We humbly ask to please be respectful of our decision to follow the orders (regardless of views and opinions).

We will continue to offer curbside service and delivery. Call us at 983-5906 or email info@candymansf.com.

NEW STORE HOURS - Monday through Saturday, 10:00am-6:00pm.

Update - May 15th

Phase 1 - The Candyman's Plan for Reopening

Dear Customers and Friends,

On May 13th, Governor Michell Lujan-Grisham announced Phase 1 orders regarding the COVID-19 pandemic to be in effect beginning May 16th. These orders allow us to open our store to the public at 20% capacity with restrictions and CDC practices firmly in place.

Before we open our doors, we want to be confident that our store is as safe as possible for our customers, staff, and students. We plan to open The Candyman under Phase 1 protocols early next week. Until that time, we will continue to offer curbside pickup, shipping, and delivery.

We will welcome customers in to The Candyman only when we are confident that our facility and processes are as safe as possible and we are assured that we're doing everything we can to protect the health and safety of our staff, customers, and students.

In order to open safely to the public, we have devised protocols including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Implementing frequent disinfecting procedures

  • Redesigning the store to ensure easy and efficient social distancing

  • Deep cleaning the facility prior to reopening to the public

  • Training staff on CDC guidelines and new shopping procedures

Under Phase 1 protocols, we will require anyone who is in the store to abide by the following:

  • Wear a mask at all times while in the store

  • Practice social distancing (allow a distance of at least 6 feet of space in between yourself and others)

  • Use hand sanitizer upon entering the store (will be provided)

  • Check in with one of our crew members upon entering the store

  • Ask for assistance before trying any instruments

  • Wash hands immediately before touching any merchandise or trying any instruments (antibacterial hand soap will be provided)

  • To not enter the store with a large group of friends or family

  • Refrain from recreational visits

An announcement will be made via social media, email, and our website to let everyone know when we are able to accept customers in the store again. We will continue to offer curbside pickup, delivery, and shipping, even after we reopen to the public.

We will also continue to offer our music students remote lessons, and are looking at ways to ensure the safety and health of our teachers and students before resuming in-store lessons.

Update - March 23rd

We just received the news today, that The Candyman's owner, seen in the photo with Idris (the customer that was in our store that tested positive for the C-Virus) has tested negative for the virus. The Santa Fe Reporter just published an article that will explain more. With our Governor issuing a stay-in-place order (she is set to speak at 3:00pm today), we will have to wait to discuss next steps until after we learn what is being asked of all of us.

Once again, we appreciate all the love and support that you all have shown. It means more than you know.

Update - March 18th

For those of you who have asked what to do if you were in our store during or after the person who tested positive for the virus, we just got off the phone with a nurse liaison at the Department of Health and are excited to share the information she provided to us.

She stressed that anyone who did not have DIRECT contact (for example, simply in the same building either during or after someone with the virus) is considered No Contact and an Extremely Low Risk of contracting the virus. There is no recommendation to be tested or self-isolated.

Anyone who was within 6 feet of someone with the virus, who had DIRECT contact, and had more than a 2 minute face-to-face conversation is considered mild-moderate contact and a moderate risk. People who fall in this category are advised to self-isolate for 14 days from the initial point of contact.

We hope this information helps put everyone's mind at ease. (At least for the incident in our store, anyway.)

Revised March 17th

As a follow-up to our notice about the actor, Idris Elba, testing positive for the virus after patronizing The Candyman, and our decision to close the store and halt lessons, we’d like to provide new information and a bit of clarification.

Mr. Elba visited on Tuesday, March 10th, between 5:15-5:45. According to reports, he was tested the following Friday. At the time of Mr. Elba’s visit, there were no confirmed cases in New Mexico.

Mr. Elba had come in contact with three staff members while in the store, two at a distance less than 6 feet, and one actual contact (with Rand, the store’s owner). He did not visit the lesson studios, but only the front register and humidified guitar room. Mr. Elba was not symptomatic. We were told by the CDC that the virus is spread by respiratory droplets, and he did not sneeze or cough at that time. Our closing of the store is a precautionary and responsible reaction, not one out of fear that the virus was spread in our store.

Rand, the store owner (and the one shown in the photo with Mr. Elba as posted on our Facebook page last week), was just tested this morning (March 17th). We feel confident the test will return negative. We will let the public know as soon as we receive confirmation after between 48 and 72 hours. Unfortunately, ABQ has run out of tests, so the other staff members were not able to be tested. However, because Rand was the one in direct contact with Mr. Elba, his should prove to be an indication for the staff.

We have been in touch with the CDC, the Epidemiology and Response Division, and the Department of Health. They have informed us of the following:

·       There are no 3rd party contact recommendations for self-isolation at this time. This means that even if Mr. Elba had been exposed to the virus before he visited The Candyman, those that may have been in the store after his visit are not being advised to be tested or to stay isolated.

·       Those that were exposed to Mr. Elba, are advised to self-isolate for 14 days. (This will expire on March 24th).

·       Only high-risk individuals and those that are showing symptoms will be allowed to be tested.

·       For anyone that was in our store and is concerned about exposure, the Department of Health is asking for you to call their hotline at 855-600-3453.

We understand the closing of The Candyman is a hardship for our customers. We highly recommend contacting The Violin Shop of Santa Fe http://violinshopofsantafe.com/. They are able to acquire gear and accessories very quickly for our customers (even non-bowed instruments and accessories).

We also recommend Stay Gold Guitars - https://staygoldguitars.com/.

For our students - We were caught off-guard with the closing and are still trying to salvage virtual lessons. Please stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, we have suspended all invoicing and have credited everyone’s account for lessons scheduled beginning Monday at 12:30 when we closed.

Revised March 16, 2020

It has just come to our attention that a Idris Elba, who patronized The Candyman Tuesday of last week, has been confirmed positive for the Coronavirus.

The Candyman is immediately closing and cancelling all lessons. We will share more information as it becomes available.

___________

Music is the glue that holds us all together, especially during such tumultuous times as these. We want everyone to know what we are doing on our end to keep everyone safe while still helping our customers and students continue to make music.

By now, most of us have become well-informed about advised safety measures to stay healthy in light of COVID-19. The Candyman feels it important to convey the additional measures we are taking and services we are offering for the betterment of our staff, teachers, students, and customers.

Beginning on Monday, March 16th (and for the foreseeable future) we will offer:

Our Customers

  • Free delivery in Santa Fe.

  • Free shipping to areas outside Santa Fe.

  • Parking lot pick up (we’ll run your purchase out to you).

Our Students

The Candyman staff and teachers truly believe that continuing weekly lessons will provide a sense of security and a bit of normalcy while keeping minds sharp and focused. We also feel it will provide a tremendous outlet for the difficult times we are all facing.

We have options for all of our students to continue their lessons while feeling safe in the lesson environment.

  • Remote lessons (via Skype, FaceTime or another video call service) will now be offered at no additional cost, for students who wish to stay out of the public at this time.

    • If students would like to temporarily switch to virtual lessons, please contact Jayda at lessons@candymansf.com or 983-5906.

  • In-person lessons will continue to be available at The Candyman Music Education Center.

    • Teachers have been instructed to wipe down all equipment and door handles prior to the beginning of each lesson.

    • All studios are stocked with sanitizing wipes and sanitizer.

    • Staff, teachers, and students will not come to The Candyman if feeling any signs of illness.

    • Students and teachers will always sit 6 feet apart during the lesson.

Everyone here at The Candyman is proud to be members of such an amazing community. We encourage Santa Fe’s citizens to shop local as much as possible. Many local businesses will be negatively impacted as a result of this crisis, so everyone’s participation in Santa Fe’s economy will be much appreciated and necessary and will directly affect the families and citizens of our community.

Remember: We’re all in this together!
